Diabetes is of two types. People with type 1 fail to produce insulin and those with type 2 fail to use insulin properly. The result is they can develop emergencies such as – ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and hyperosmolar coma.
- Ketoacidosis- It is common in people suffering from diabetes type 1. When body starts using more fats than sugar due to lack of insulin, it leads to production of ketones. High level of ketones leads to this problem. The main symptoms are – thirst, dry skin, breathing problem, fruity breath, the trouble to pay attention, vomiting and tiredness.
- Severe hypoglycemia- It can be present even in those that take special care of their sugar level. Dizziness, headache, clumsiness, skin turns pale, perspiration, a feel of tingling in mouth, hunger, mood fluctuation are main symptoms. You should take juice, hard candy and glucose tablets if you find yourself suffering from this type of diabetes.
- Hyperglycemia- It is the condition with high blood sugar in the person who eats too much. Stress is another cause for this problem. The symptoms are thirst, increased urination, warm skin and high sugar level in the urine. At this time the only thing that will save you is to follow the suggested practices for diabetes control.
- Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketonic Syndrome (HHNS) - it can be due to either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes but mostly found in Type 2 diabetic patients. In this condition the body makes lots of urine and tries to remove the excess level of blood glucose. This leads to dehydration and if is not diagnosed in time it causes seizures, then hyperosmolar coma and finally death of the patient. The alarming signs are excess thirst, sleepiness, dry mouth; loss of vision, skin remains warm but does not cause perspiration, weakness and delusion. Take one glass alcohol and liquid free of caffeine during this time.
